Impact Protection Test - IK

Impact protection is designed to protect the wearer from the effects of being hit by a falling or thrown object, or to protect them in the event of a fall or contact with the ground or some other hard object. We can provide testing and certification for a range of impact protection products to help you gain compliance, and to help you to access new markets. IK impact protection test introduce in IEC 62262 and application in lighting industry. IEC 62262 IK protection test means that electrical equipment housings are protected against external mechanical collisions, and the IK standard applies to rated voltages not exceeding 72.

STANDARDS FOR GLASS IMPACT AND IMPACT RESISTANCEHere you will find an overview of important international standards with a focus on glass, in particular impact resistance and impact load. It is important for us to communicate the standards, test setups, and procedures in a clear and simple way. Glass is a material that is very important to us and has not been researched enough. There is a lack of bundled special knowledge about the impact resistance of glass and we want to close this gap.

WHY IMPACT TESTINGRELIABLE AND COST-EFFICIENT PRODUCTSImpact testing has an enormous scientific importance and practical relevance. A collision between two items or objects can often result in damage to one or both. The damage might be a crack, fracture or break. Therefore, engineers need to know how materials and products behave under impact and the magnitude of forces they can withstand.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF IMPACT TESTINGANALYSIS OF WEAK POINTSThe end goal of impact testing is to provide accurate analytics regarding the specimen’s weak links. The inference from that data will then be used to reinforce and strengthen the enclosures, thus making them more impact-resistant, robust and safe. Making the products more durable and secure increases brand trustworthiness amongst consumers.

SEVERITY INCREASEFrom IK class IK07, the energy gain per level increases by more than 100%. The exponential increase in impact resistance makes the demands on glasses particularly high and places maximum demands on the material and the integration method. Especially in the extremely robust area of IK10 and IK11, where the impact energy ranges from 20 to 50 joules, every detail counts. The correct integration of the glass for optimal impact resistance is an important prerequisite. We offer you proven integration methods at minimal cost.

The key question is what else do you want to achieve?Ensure competitive advantage in invitations for tenderIncrease resilienceImprove product lifespanImprove brand imagePresent technology dominanceWe will gladly assist you in resolving these issues and quickly and competently provide you with a cost-benefit analysis.

CALCULATE ENERGY IK TESTA Joule is a physical unit of energy. In the IK test, you calculate the impact energy by multiplying the height of fall with the weight of the impact element and the number 10.Impact energy (W) = fall height (h) * weight (m) * 10Calculation example: 1.00 m drop height * 1.00 kg mass impact element * 10 = 10 joules impact energy 0.50 m drop height * 2.00 kg mass impact element * 10 = 10 joules impact energy.

IK ratings are an international classification that indicate the degree of protection provided by electrical enclosures against external mechanical impacts.

IK ratings are defined as IK00 to IK10. The IK rating scale identifies the ability of an enclosure to resist impact energy levels measured in joules (J) in accordance with IEC 62262 (2002).

IEC 62262 specifies how the enclosure must be mounted for testing, the atmospheric conditions required, the quantity and distribution of the test impacts and the impact hammer to be used for each level of IK rating.

The test is carried out by a Charpy pendulum impact tester. To ensure your components are sufficiently protected, it’s important to understand the protection level offered from each rating and what IK rating you require for your application.

An IK rating varies from 0 – 10, with IK10 offering the highest level of protection.

IK00 Not protected

IK01 Test: Protected against 0.14 joules impact.

Equivalent to impact of 0.25 kg mass dropped from 56 mm above impacted surface.

IK02 Test: Protected against 0.2 joules impact.

Equivalent to impact of 0.25 kg mass dropped from 80 mm above impacted surface.

IK03 Test: Protected against 0.35 joules impact.

IK06 Test: Protected against 1 joules impact.

Equivalent to impact of 0.25 kg mass dropped from 400 mm above impacted surface.

IK07 Test: Protected against 2 joules impact.

Equivalent to impact of 0.5 kg mass dropped from 400 mm above impacted surface.

IK08 Test: Protected against 5 joules impact.
Equivalent to impact of 1.7 kg mass dropped from 300 mm above impacted surface.

IK09 Test: Protected against 10 joules impact.

Equivalent to impact of 5 kg mass dropped from 200 mm above impacted surface.

IK10 Test: Protected against 20 joules impact.

IK ratings are defined as IK and a number from 00 to 10, this indicates the degree of protection provided by the electrical enclosures against external mechanical impacts.
IK Ratings (or impact protection ratings) are now the international standard for an enclosure around electrical equipment, IK Ratings were originally outlined in 1995 by the European standard BS EN 50102 and was later amended in 1997 with IEC 60068-2-75. This was then followed up in 2002 with the European standard EN62262 which is the equivalent of the international standard IEC 62262 (2002). An IK Rating depicts the way the enclosures should be mounted for the tests to be carried out, even atmospheric conditions, how many impacts should be made (which is based on size of enclosure) and even distribution of the impacts, the size, style, dimensions and even material of the various types of hammer (object) designed to produce the energy levels required. This is then measured in joules.IK Rated products are important especially if they are in public areas, high traffic areas, commercial environments and areas that are prone to vandalism. If a product becomes damaged, this can result in the product failing to work or even failing completely.
An IK (Impact Protection) rating is a unit used to define the levels of protection an electrical enclosure offers to any contents and assemblies housed inside. This is calculated by measuring the enclosure''''s protection against external mechanical impacts.
To ensure your components are sufficiently protected, it’s important to understand the protection level offered from each rating and what IK rating you require for your application. An IK rating varies from 0 – 10, with IK10 offering the highest level of protection.

CDG provides IK Impact protection testing in India. CDG is an accredited organization in India.
PRINCIPLESThis rating can be decisive in a product selection. It doesn’t rate the mechanical life but the capacity of a product to face environmental aggressions. Therefore it is a key feature for any product intended for consumer goods. The IK impact resistance is rated through a specific test carried out with a “Charpy pendulum” impact tester. This device measures the resistance of a product submitted to 3 repeated identical impacts. The impact energy (in joules) depends on 2 elements:• The distance between the hammer and the tested sample• The hammer weightAccording to the resistance level rated during the test, an IK code is assigned to the product. This code ranging from IK0 to IK10, determines the energy level the product can absorb.

WHAT IS THE IK IMPACT RESISTANCE RATING?Technical brochures often refer to IK rating. But what does this rating stand for? The anti-vandal pushbuttons switches AV 250 comply with the IK standardInitially related to the IP sealing test, the Ik rating became a specific rating to measure the impact resistance of product in 1995.It is now related to the EN 62-262 European standard.

We offer a complete IK (Impact Protection) consultation and testing service covering all the different levels of impact protection.
IK ratings are defined as IKXX, where “XX” is a number from 00 to 10 indicating the degrees of protection provided by enclosures (including luminaires) against external mechanical impacts. The different IK ratings relate to the ability of an enclosure to resist impact energy levels measured in joules (J). EN/IEC 62262 specifies how the enclosure must be mounted for testing, the atmospheric conditions required, the quantity and distribution of the test impacts and the impact hammer to be used for each level of IK rating.
