Workplace safety is something that every company needs to make a top priority. There are many types of hazards that exist, and in general they are all just covered under the generic topic of workplace safety. Interestingly, electrical safety is often addressed separately by many businesses. Some people wonder why electrical safety is so important, and why it gets so much attention. There are many statistics and facts that can provide some insights into what makes electrical safety stand out when it comes to the efforts that are made to improve safety.
The following are some interesting, and often unsettling, facts about electrical safety in the workplace.
High Incident Rates – In a survey 97% of professional electricians have reported that they have been shocked or otherwise injured while on the job. While most of these were minor shocks, this illustrates just how often they take place.
Workplace Fatalities – Electrocutions ranks as the fourth most common cause of workplace deaths.
Disabling Injuries – Electrocutions are also responsible for a large number of employees becoming disabled each year. On average 3600 people are disabled in this way each year.
Medical Costs – The medical costs related to a serious electrical burn can be over $4 million and take many years.
Total Costs – Medical costs aren’t the only expense associated with electricity related incidents. These incidents can cause fires, damage to equipment, and more
Electrical Safety is Unique
As you can see from the statistics above, electrical safety a priority in the workplace is very important. In addition, hazards related to electricity are often quite different than other types of workplace dangers. Finally, electrical hazards are not something that the average person has much experience with, which is why it is critical that they are given at least basic electrical safety training so they know how to avoid accidents or injuries. While it is true that all workplace safety is important, electrical safety needs to be treated differently to ensure the safety of everyone in the facility.
So always give the priority to electrical safety audit otherwise it will cause harm to all organisation.
Scope of Electrical Safety Audit
Electrical Safety Audit reviews the degree of safety of the overall electrical system in the premises, providing recommendations and measures to be taken to minimize or eliminate the risk of electrical hazards. The following is the scope in detail:
Review of the electrical hazards identification and risk assessment.
Review of the earthing and lightning protection system implemented in plant to ensure the equipment and human safety.
To check the hotspot in the electrical installation and equipment by using thermal imager.
To check earth resistance of earth pits and sockets on sampling basis.
Review of EPM (Electrical Preventive Maintenance) programme in the facility.
Review of the electrical documents like register of electrical installations, single line diagrams, test records (Transformer oil test, Insulation Resistance test and Earth Resistance tests) and data sheets of critical electrical installations.
Review of the availability & reliability of emergency systems such as DG set, UPS, battery etc. Physical verification of warning signage & labeling on all electrical distribution panels, transformer and switch-gear.

Electrical safety audits must be performed on a regular basis for all electrical safety related programs within a workplace. More specifically, field work audits must happen yearly, and electrical program reviews must occur every three years or less. The three-year review gives the employer a chance to find outdated aspects of the safety program that need to be addressed.
There are five primary goals when it comes to performing an electrical safety audit. Those are:
To identify any and all electrical hazards.
To review all electrical safety work practices and determine if there needs to be any changes made.
To inspect all electrical maintenance tools and determine if there needs to be any replacements.
To go over potential electrical system modifications and determine if there are any savings to be had.
The safety audit can take as little as a day or up to several depending on how large the company is and how many electricians they employ. During that period of time, the following subjects will most certainly be considered:
Site interviews that test employee knowledge on PPE, procedure training, shock and arc flash hazard awareness, boundary determination and setup, and the proper use of electrical safety tools.
The use of an electrical qualification process.
The evaluation of compliant danger and warning labels.
Whether or not the right safety tools are being used.
Whether or not the employer is providing the right safety equipment.
These are only a handful of the subjects that an audit will cover. Depending on the standards and regulations that the facility is required to follow, there may be other subjects that the auditor(s) goes over. For that reason, it is important to be familiar with all the relevant standards for your unique situation to make sure your audit goes as smoothly as possible.
ELEMENTS OF ELECTRICAL SAFETY AUDITING PROGRAMME
ESA Programme can be broadly classified into 3 major areas namely:
1. Pre-Audit.
2. Audit
3. Post-Audit
The efficacy of the audit (identification & control of electrical risks) largely depends on the pre-audit and the post-audit sections. Pre and post audit elements are user / client dependent and obviously the audit depends on the audit team. Unless the ESA objectives are clearly defined and audit recommendations considered, the ESA programme will not be successful. An effective ESA programme should include elements such as competent audit team formation, pre-audit briefing, collection & review of relevant information (preventive maintenance documentation, accident reports, electrical inspector’s reports, history cards), discussion with safety & electrical officers, plant visit and then the consolidation to the top management. Finalizing the audit methodology should be in consultation with the requirements of the auditee.
Pre-Electrical Safety Audit Elements
ESA Scope of Work
Many are still unclear about the scope of Electrical Safety audits. The terms, Electrical energy audits, Electrical engineering studies and Electrical Safety audits are interchangeably used even by many top technical officials of industries. Unless the scope of study is well understood, the objectives of the audit cannot be attained. Defining scope of Electrical Safety audit based on the specific requirement is the first step in the process of Electrical Safety auditing.

In a simple term, Electrical Safety Audit is an audit of an Industry or even Household to check any hazard point in the whole ecosystem related to Electricity to avoid any damages in the future and in the due process, Electrical Safety Audit also helps to analyze steps that can be taken to save fuel costs.
Why is Electrical Safety Audit necessary?
Avoiding Losses:
Electrical Hazard can have a severe impact on businesses. It can lead to fire hazards, shock, severe burns which can, in turn, lead to loss of life and property. Thus it becomes crucial to get the electrical ecosystem checked regularly and best practices are followed in handling the system.
Saving Costs:
In a very competitive environment like today in the world of business, it is very essential to keep the product cost down without compromising on the quality of the product. One of the ways it can be achieved is by saving production costs. And subsequently keeping the fuel cost down helps saving production cost.
Equipments Life:
The Electrical Safety Audit also helps in identifying whether the expensive electrical equipment is being used properly and it will not get damaged in the future due to reasons which could have been avoided. These types of equipment if damaged can put companies at a huge disadvantageous position.
Industries that handle inflammable substances have to be extra careful with Electricity and electronics handling. Factories that have IT infrastructures and data servers, damage of which can incur huge losses, also should be very cautious.
Few procedures which incur during Electrical Safety Audit are listed below:
Analysis of Current Systems and Practices
Document Collection
Abiding Statutory Compliances
Physical/ On-site Inspection
Protection System Checks
Static Electricity Hazard Checks
Any Near Accident Misses Data Collection

Why Electrical Safety Audits (ESA) Necessary?
Identifying potential electrical hazards to prevent or minimize loss of life and property is perceived seriously by many industries the world over. General safety auditing is popular where the objectives & concepts are clear whereas ESA is a specialized area that is still in the process of being understood by many. In factories, around 8% of all fatalities are due to accidents caused by electricity. Data compiled by international organizations like National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) indicate that nearly one fourth of all fires are caused by electrical appliances or installations. Major fire incidents in various types of occupancies over a number of years show that nearly 40% of the fires are initiated by electrical causes such as short circuits, overloading, loose electrical connections.
Although electrical hazards will be identified and assessed in general safety audits, comprehensive electrical safety audits can provide a thorough review of the electrical system. This could identify potential electrical hazards, flaws in design system, maintenance system, etc.

Periodic inspection and testing of an electrical installation is an imperative activity, to maintain the Electrical systems in safe condition. Electrical safety audit mainly constitutes inspection and testing activity. As directed by the Indian Electricity Rules-1956 (2000 amendment), Electrical installations should be subjected to periodic safety audits at regular intervals to identify the deformations in the installations, which impair safety. Generally, the audit frequency will depend on the nature and type of activities within each area of operation. A reasonable general guide is that inspections should be carried out once each year, with more frequent inspections for specific areas or activities. Records of injury and damage accidents should be examined and use to identify high-risk areas and activities and consequently those needing more frequent inspection.
